Mason County Booking Photo Records
A booking photograph documents appearance during an agency’s booking process. It does not say why custody ended. Mason County Jail may release a person on bond, after dismissal, for time served, after sentence completion, or under another court order. The jail may instead transfer the person to MDOC, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody. Each event can remove the person from local custody, but only some are community releases.
Michigan FOIA creates a way to request existing public records. It does not make every booking photo automatically available online, nor does it make every part of a jail file public. The Mason County Sheriff may apply lawful exemptions and must consider whether nonexempt portions can be separated. A photo should be paired with the sheriff release entry, court disposition, or MDOC status before any conclusion about release is made.
Can a photo prove that someone was released? No. It can help identify the person linked to a booking or MDOC record. The custody system’s out date, disposition, transfer field, court order, or discharge status supplies the release evidence.
Mason County Released Mugshot Channels
Mason County research found several distinct image channels, but only two direct official photo routes. The Mason County Sheriff is the custodian for a county-jail booking photo. MDOC OTIS may display a later state offender image for a person within MDOC scope. Those photos cannot be treated as interchangeable.

No Mason County Mugshot Feed
Research Section 19’s distinctive mugshot angle is the absence of an official searchable release-photo feed. The official Mason County Sheriff jail pages show facility information and imagery, but the reviewed navigation did not expose a 24-hour list, a 72-hour list, a historical booking search, or a recent-release mugshot gallery. A current-custody page, if added later, would still answer who remains confined rather than preserve proof of who left.
No official Mason County Sheriff mobile app was verified. The statewide Michigan Sheriff Connect application does not become a Mason County source merely because it discusses jail information in general. The visitation-related mobile products linked from jail materials are not release archives. Before relying on any future app, confirm that the sheriff identifies its publisher and Mason-specific functions.
A date-bounded release inquiry is described on the Released Last 24 Hours page. It supplies custody context, but the photograph still comes from the sheriff’s booking record.
The official Mason County jail information page is useful for confirming the facility source, not for finding a person’s booking image.

Request Mason County Booking Photos
The sheriff’s own FOIA channel is the correct official route for a Mason County jail booking photograph. Do not send the request to the general county FOIA coordinator. Mason County’s administrator page expressly says its policy does not apply to the independently administered sheriff and prosecutor. The sheriff page instructs requesters to contact the Sheriff’s Office for its request form and to have the report number ready.
A narrow request helps the custodian locate an existing image. Use the full booking name, known booking or report number, approximate booking date, and related case number. Ask for the original electronic booking photograph and its booking identifier. If release proof is also needed, request the out date, out time, disposition, and receiving agency in the same focused custody record request.
- Confirm that Mason County Sheriff made the booking. A photo from another jail must be requested from that jail.
- Contact the sheriff through the official sheriff FOIA page and obtain the current request form.
- Describe the booking by name, date, report or booking number, and court case number where known.
- Ask for the original electronic booking photograph and the nonexempt booking-release fields tied to it.
- Request segregation of nonexempt material and the statutory basis and appeal route for any withheld part.
Michigan FOIA generally calls for an agency response within five business days: grant, denial, partial grant and partial denial, or one written extension of no more than ten business days. That is a response schedule, not a promise that every image is produced by that date. Permitted labor, copying, and mailing fees can apply. No flat Mason County booking-photo fee was verified, so no amount should be assumed.

Mason County MDOC Offender Photos
OTIS can display an offender image for a person under MDOC jurisdiction or within its three-year public post-discharge window. It does not contain county-jail-only cases. A person who served a Mason County jail sentence and returned to the community may never appear. A person convicted in Mason County and sent to state prison can appear even though no MDOC prison is located in the county.
Search by MDOC number when possible and compare the full profile. OTIS may show aliases, physical descriptors, convictions, status, supervision or facility location, “Date Paroled,” and discharge information. Its image can help separate similar names. MDOC also warns that a photo may be missing for someone who left before electronic photographs were taken or where no electronic image exists.
An OTIS photo must be called an MDOC offender image. It is not proof that the Mason County Sheriff released or published a booking photo. If the current status says parole, the person has left prison but remains supervised. If it says discharged, MDOC jurisdiction ended on the shown date. If it says prisoner and lists an institution, the person remains in state custody.
Mason County Registry Photo Limits
The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is a separate State Police source for qualifying registrants. It may show a photo, aliases, marks, registration status, and other public registration data. It is not a general released-inmate list. “Active” means active registration in Michigan, not MDOC discharge, while “incarcerated” refers to Michigan custody. Other registry statuses have their own narrow meanings.

The registry can corroborate a legal registration duty but cannot confirm the general release population or replace a sheriff record.
Absence can have many causes, including an offense outside the registry law, the end of a registration term, a court order, nonresident status, death, or limits on public display. No custody outcome should be inferred from that absence.
Mason County News Photo Checks
Local news may publish a police handout, a courtroom photograph, or a file image while reporting a Mason County case. Read the caption and source line. A police-provided image may come from an arrest file, while a courtroom image does not. News reports are episodic and cannot serve as a complete release list.
Commercial mugshot and data pages are a weaker category. They can retain stale images, confuse jurisdictions, omit a later disposition, or attach a photo to a similar name. They are not certified custody or release sources. No commercial mugshot publisher, data broker, or removal service is linked or endorsed. Verify any surfaced image against the Mason County Sheriff, court file, or MDOC record.
Mason County Mugshots After Set-Aside
Michigan set-aside law appears at MCL 780.621 and following sections. Eligibility, exclusions, waiting periods, and automatic operation depend on current law and the conviction history. A set-aside changes public access to the conviction record. It does not justify claiming that every earlier jail image, press copy, or private copy disappears.
OTIS says it removes information when a sentencing court sets aside or expunges the conviction, or when that occurs by operation of law. The sheriff may still need a specific correction or access request tied to its own record rules. A missing online result is not enough to prove a set-aside. The court’s order is the sound source.
No verified Michigan anti-pay-to-remove mugshot statute was found in the research sweep. Do not assume that a payment will or should cause deletion, and do not rely on anyone who promises it. A records correction should go to the office that made the record, with the booking identifier and the legal document supporting the requested change.
